Reading is one of my favorite hobbies. Any chance I get to curl up with a good book, I take it. Between lazy days at the beach or jetting off on long flights, summer is when I’m usually able to find the most time to dive into several of the books on my list.
Here are five books I’m reading this summer 2019.
Elaine Welteroth may be best known for taking the helms at Teen Vogue in 2016 and transforming the publication into the must-read inclusive and brilliant political and social justice coverage read it is today. But fast forward to the present, her part-manifesto, part-memoir, More Than Enough: Claiming Space for Who You Are (No Matter What They Say), which was released on June 11, is already is a NY Times Bestseller. In it, Elaine recounts her journey through the good and bad, and reminds us all that we are more than enough.
A novel by the highly talented Dominican-American author behind the book The Poet X, With the Fire on High already had a number of things going for it that piqued my interest. The cover alone is absolutely stunning! And the fact that it explores the story of a pregnant teen was just the icing on this Dominican cake (P.S. if you haven’t tried Dominican cake, you’re missing out on life!). Through With the Fire on High, author Elizabeth Acevedo is seeking to change the conversation around teen pregnancy and motherhood by challenging the stigma around it.
I actually can’t believe I haven’t read Big Little Lies yet, but I am completely obsessed with the HBO series starring Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern and Zoe Kravitz, so I knew I had to finally give this book a go.
Among the genre of books I love to read, career and personal development are favorites, which is why I knew I had to have one of these included in my summer reading list. Influencer: Building Your Personal Brand in the Age of Social Media actually came across my desk several months ago. While I’ve skimmed it here and there, I hadn’t done a full deep dive into it—but as someone within the digital content creation space, I knew I needed to sit down with it, and really start highlighting and jotting down all the important pieces of advice Ms Brittany hands out here. You’ll find everything from learning how to monetize your influence to landing an agent—a definite must-read for anyone hoping to make a living in this field.
We’ll soon be seeing a television adaptation of Celeste Ng’s bestselling novel, thanks to Reese Witherspoon, Kerry Washington, and Hulu. Little Fires Everywhere explores the town of Shaker Heights, where newcomers, mother and daughter Mia Warren and Pearl, find themselves with neighbors seeking to uncover Mia’s mysterious past. A psychological mystery that shows the power of motherhood and the dangers lead by perfection.
